Actually, it was hardwood...

I found my little chalk bass on the hardwoods this AM. He was still breathing, so I put him back in the tank, and added some Stress Coat. Within a half hour he had perked up and was looking okay. Later this afternoon, my wife reported that he had rolled back over and given up...

I was a bit surprised to find him on the floor, since the tank is covered except 1.5" at the front so the autofeeder can dump pellets in, and I didn't think chalk bass had a reputation for jumping.

Has anyone else lost one to jumping? Has anyone else lost another fish which was not a "known jumper"?

I had a PJ Cardinal go base jumping recently... I assumed he had just died, but I later found a little fish jerky behind the chiller.

8 inch stars'n'stripes puffer, my first one ever...found halfway across the room, half-dried onto the hardwood floor. I found him around 10ish in the morning...no idea how many hours he'd been there. I didn't know puffers, especially that size, could get the momentum needed to get out of the tank!

Broke my heart. He was my fat, dumb, happy buddy. I promptly went out and bought a wee tiny baby one.

now you see the problem with glass lids VS the mesh lids.

using daves mesh and idea you can make a very nice looking lid
of the likes ive never seen anywhere else, and make a tight fit for the feeder as well.
have you seen daves style lids? ive seen mesh lids but nothing like these.

My clownfish jumped out the tank last night. I walked by and heard him jump and found him behind the stand, put him back in the tank and hes doing fine.

Also about a year ago one of my chromis jumped out, but he wasn't so lucky. Found him dried up and stuck to the hardwood when I woke up.

I found my longnose hawkfish on the glass top of my tank, after coming home from a weekend trip. He was like jerky, and perched upright just like he used to sit on the liverock...

Almost any fish *can* jump, some are more known for it than others, particularly long, thin fish - the kind that can fit through the smallest opening.

The weirdest jumper I ever had was a LARGE - and I mean LARGE long-horned cowfish. He probably weighed 3 lbs. I came in to the shop in the morning and he was GONE. I found him behind the tank and it was a trick to get him out of there with some tongs. Ewww.

How he got up the velocity to make it out of the 75g he was in (he had to be at least 8" long), I will never know, but we'd had storms that night and I suspect the lightning may have startled him enough to take a flying leap.

You know, I never thought of that...but at the time, my puffer's tank wasn't far from a window. I wonder if something like that is what prompted my fish to do that...
