Changing Out Sand

A friend of mine gave me his 75g reef setup including all the livestock because he was having to travel a lot. The catch was I had to pick it up within a couple days with no real planning. So on short notice I did this tank move. My other tank is a 34g Solana so all my experience (limited) is based on small AIOs. Although I did not know this at the time, I have since learned through research on this site and others that the tank setup is pretty basic. The tank is not drilled and all he had was to HOB Curent USA surface skimmers rated at about 30g each. I have had the tank running for a couple months but I have come to the conclusion that I need to set up a sump. So I bought a LifeReef Overflow, 29g baffled sump, Reef Octopus NWB-110 skimmer, Ehiem 1060 return pump, and JBJ ATO. I still need all the plumbing though to get it operational. The first thing I figured out was I set the tank up too close to the wall to get the overflow in there. As much as I am dreading it, I need to basically tear the tank down and move it few inches in order to set my sump up. All of this leads into my actual question. Can I change out my sand during the move? The current sand seems very coarse with a lot of shell and fragments of old coral and such. With the limited filtration I currently have the coarse sand seems to get funky pretty quick. This will probably improve once I get the sump and new skimmer but I think I just like the cleaner look of finer sand. If I change the sand is it going to cause any problems? Does anybody have recommendations on types/brands of sand in general. I'm basically ignorant on the subject.
