Is there a ratio of sulfate and chloride required in a marine system that keeps an ionic balance? You can dose mag as either sulfate or a chloride. If you dosed with calcium chloride and then magnesium chloride, would you start to lose ionic balance with an influx of chlorides and a lack of sulfates? If so, is there a specific known amount or ratio of abundance?...ie, 3 chloride to 1 sulfate or 1 chloride to 1 sulfate...or is it all just semantics...lol.

1 Gal water + 3C Epsom salt + 5C Mag flakes

1 Gal water + 7.25C Mag flakes + .75C Epsom salt

If you are using a DIY two part system for calcium and alkalinity, use the first one.

If you are using anything else (including a commercial two part) for calcium and alkalinity, use the second. http://www.atlantareefclub.org/forums/images/smilies/smile.gif" alt="" />

A 10:1 ratio of magnesium chloride to magnesium sulfate gives you the ionic balance in natural seawater. The recipe is in the Randy Holmes Farley article referenced above by Ralph, aka Randy's Two-Part Solution.
