Closed loop?

I going to be running a closed loop on my 220. How should the outlets be flowing into the tank? I was thinking two in the front corners blowing back towards the rock @ 45 degrees more or less. And two flowing out of the rock blowing toward the front glass at opposing angles. I will have All 4 pointing different directions to try to randomize the flow. Or I thought about having two outlets coming from the top blowing down towards the rock.

Also is the oceans motions the only option for flow randomization? Do I really need one?

On the 150 I got from you there were 10 outlets for the CL. Pic below

If I were to plumb this, I would use at least 6 if not 8 of the holes. Remember, that even though a SCWD has 2 or 4 outlets, etc, you're running multiple lines off of each outlet to randomize the flow.

Do you need an SCWD? Well, it's the easiest way IMHO, but you could probably use a bunch of smaller pumps if you wanted to. Or ball-valve each outlet so that you can adjust the flow and just let it blow away. The big issue to me is that even if the water is turbulent, unless there is some variance in flow (i.e., one side stopping at one point) detritus will eventually build up in spots.

I ran a closed loop on my 150.

My preference is to use power heads to randomize the flow (Vortech's or Tunze's). Programmability is a virtue!

I liked the closed loop feature (it's 'clean' looking), just think there are better ways to get turbulence.

PH's are also easier to clean than SCWD's, but can gunk up faster.

(easier to get to/take out, even if you add ball valves+unions, which can still be a pain)

Pick your poison, either way...

Just my $0.02

Closed loop on an oceans motion or use 1" scwd that has easy access to perform maintenance. I have a hang up about pumps in my display or hanging off the side of it. If the closed loop is located remotely it is a lot quieter than the power heads as well. Actually silent in most cases. Like Bill stated it is pick your poison I guess.
