Clown Experts...

OK so I bought 2 beautiful snowflake clowns last weekend. They were in a tank with several other clowns and they were all hosting (being hosted) in a green Goni. So I but an identical looking green Goni and bring everything home. The Goni looks awesome with long flowing polyps but the clowns will not go near it. The clowns are doing great (eating, swimming, not being picked on) but just swimming around the tank like they are looking for something. Should I just leave them alone or try moving the Goni? Any thoughts?

Its more likely to have trouble with the goni. If its doing good i would leave it alone.

The clowns will host whatever they want. Most folks end up with dead gonis. good luck

My Clowns skip the Green and Red Gonipora but they really love some Hairy Mushrooms. It takes time when you move them to a new place for them to feel comfortable and decide what makes them feel safe and happy.

Agreed, they aren't really suitable homes for clowns; probably part of the reason you don't see them host them regularly over RBTAs or other LPS stuff. Goni's don't do well being touched in my experience; even crabs will cause mine to retract for quite a bit sometimes.

James I respect your knowledge so thanks for the reply. They just seem to be wandering around the tank. I guess if I was introduced in to a new place I would do the same.... I just want to make them happy.

Darren I assume you dont have an anemone and probably aren't going with one. Correct? If not an alternative would be a Frog Spawn I have seen them take to those quite often.

Fwiw I purchased a set of snowflakes once and a rbta at the same time.and pit.just that with them in a pasta strainer and they took to it right away and after I transferred them back in they had no problems with it

They usually quickly take to whatever they like once they notice it; seems to happen pretty frequently with GBTA and RBTAs, usually within minutes they sprint to it and then play for a while. I had no luck with my clowns and LTA as I think clarkii prefer them over say maroons and other species.

My clowns wandered the tank for almost 9 months until they finally noticed my RBTA. Now they're extremely protective of it. Like every other thing in this hobby. .....patience.

I have 2 ocellaris clowns hosting a rock, one clark hosting some zoas, and two maroons (in a separate tank) hosting below a RBTA (though the female goes up to the nem for sleeping). I think they are all crazy.
