what is a good but fairly cheap (like you can actually get both) controler i could get to use on my 50gal? just looking to get my feet wet with one. if its for me then i'll go better at a later time. i dont need all the bells and whisltles either. just something to get the feel for it and see if i like it.

THe RKL is only $99 and is a good base controller. Hit up Scott at Aquarium Specialty; he can get it to you in one day.

thanks folks. let me go research it. ive seen and heard great things about the reefkeeper two as well.
anybody else have a suggestion or a good used one collecting dust?

The rk2's are great little units too, but they're more expensive. If you want to get one on the cheap, the rkl is the ticket.

A used rk2 may not be worthwhile. Take into consideration that you'll need to replace the ph probe when you're looking at pricing.

That and RK2's are discontinued.. I never did hear why though.. I got my RK2 from Jeremy (your still the man!!) And have got the chance to fiddle with a couple RKL's.. Why they changed the menu options and programing jargon I will never know.. Its no big deal to figure out how to do it properly, its just 1000x's more complicated when it comes to navigating the menus.. Wonder why they changed it so much compared to the RK2?

Anyone know?

I was looking at the RKL too but once I priced it with enough outlets to manage my setup (8 plugs) and the pH option it was almost $300 already. I just decided to plunge at that point and went APEX. The $100 setup was just controller, 4 plugs, and temp probe. If you plan on ever using the pH options, the RKL gets expensive pretty quick after buying the switched SL1 and probe.

i own one and love it. it does get expensive, but the cool part is you can grow with it. i just bought the RKL #1 and can spend another few hundred any time to upgrade its functionality.

IMO its one of the best deals out there for a controller.
