I'm new here, and maybe this is already being practiced amongst some of you. BUT, maybe not, sooooo...

It goes like this. You have a group of people who have coral they don't want to loose. So, you get with others that can be trusted who also have tanks and give them frags of your prized coral(s). Everyone is in agreement that at anytime you can request to have your coral returned, such as in the event of a tank crash or whatever. Everything gets documented and as long as everyone is honest, it's a win win.

The beautiful thing is that while you are keeping someone's frag, you can also at some point frag your own piece to keep.

I believe that most of us in this hobby are honest individuals who would bend over backwards to help another reefer and not take advantage of something like this.

Anyhow, I think it could be a great way to provide you with comfort knowing that even if a tank were to crash, at least you have something waiting on you to start over and it not cost an arm and a leg. If nothing else you get a few frags of your own for helping protect someone else's investments.

Anyone already doing this?

i have a similar arrangement with a friend who lives close to where i work. although not intended to be an insurance type system it can easily work out that way i give him frags to keep and at any time if i want a frag back he is more than happy to give it back. and vice versa

I've seen it happen where a tank crash happens and someone who received a frag from that individual offers a frag so they can get "their" coral back. And then there are the individuals who straight up offer a frag of anything they have. There a lot of very generous people in this hobby. </em>

If anyone is in the Columbus area and wants to start something like this, pm me. My frag tank should be up within a month or two.
