Im starting a new thread for coral qt procedures, because I didn't want to high Jack @YoungReefer10g coral dip thread. Im about a couple months away from coral, but would like to know is it worth having like a 24×24 aio tank running for just qt'ing corals and if so how long to qt them, do you still swap frag plugs, and do you still dip? Since there's no fish in there, do you just something like matrix to cycle it like someone said earlier? Thank you guys, hopefully this will help others as well. Damn newbies like me!!!

Yes, you can still to dip. Dipping removes and/or kills pests.

1) I first dip, then acclimate and QT most corals in a 20g AIO tank.
2) Then dip again, acclimate to my main reef tank; this includes cutting and gluing corals to a small/medium sized rock.

I have no fish in my coral qt (at the moment), but I used sand and rock from my display when I set it up. In the future, my coral qt will have fish to perform various duties of keeping the coral clean of any remaining pests as well as any algae.

  1. Break off frag plug.
  2. Dip.
  3. Place in QT.
  4. Write post it note listing the coral and date in QT.
  5. Wait 4-6 weeks from introduction of last coral (this can be a problem for me).
  6. Move to main tank.
I've got a 20g tank with an egg crate "shelf" with 3 levels that I arrange the frags on. I run a Seachem Tidal 55 filter with a small powerhead for flow. In the Tidal I've got some filter floss and a bag of Matrix. I typically do 10g water changes on both of my main systems. When I have corals in QT, I'll make sure to remove 5g of clean old water and do a water change in the QT tank with that. There's bacteria in the bioballs and that's always been good enough to take up any excess nutrients from whatever I'm feeding the corals. I don't have an adequate light on it so everything I put in there tends to brown out but it's better than monti nudis.

Thank you guys, that's a great help. I appreciate it. I was thinking about trying to find something like this once it's time. Im going to put it on a nice kitchen cabinet next to my dt, so I have to stay rimless. Some of those tanks were sold used a bit ago on here I believe!

I mean, this is a great idea but I see one major problem - Once you get this one up and running, you'd have to get another coral QT tank. Other than that, I think it's perfect.

I was actually planning to use that one for my coral qt, and leave it up and running like Adam does.

Exactly the problem my man. Such a nice tank, on a nice stand right next to the display? You'll turn it into a nano in less than a year and have to come up with another QT system to support the main tank and your new nano.

(Both this and the previous post should be read in a jocular manner.)

Sorry im a bit slow at times, I think that would send my wife off the deep end!!! That's funny as hell though, I thought I was thinking wrong at first!

I must say....believe what they say as true...I am comming down from YEARS of the multiple tank syndrome addiction phase of my life. I will confess I have never quarentined or dipped, other than a fresh water dip at times. I have caught flat worms once from a frag purchase. I am not saying to go my route at all...especially for those that spend so much money on trending frags and high end corals. but in my case, I just never ended up keeping a QT tank as one, once cycled. :)
