I just got a coralife skimmer and it says the pump need to be 3"-4" below the water line will it still work well if it is 6.5" below the water?

it should work, you'll just have more head above the pump which in turns means you'll open up your flow control more on the skimmer. i have the opposite happening where my euro-reef that is supposed to be in 7'' but is only in 5'' of water. i have to close down the output a little more than normal to make up for the difference in head.

I found the CL skimmer to be beginner unfriendly.

Now that I understand it operation is easy and it does a good job.

so are there any help full tips for operation, and what do you think about the the depth of the pump?

i used to have one of these, all i can tell you that, it is absolutely nesessary to have an auto topoff device if your having it in a sump!! The reason is that without the ATO , as the water level decreases the skimmer will not skim as much. You need to keep your water level as close to the same as possible! Dont attempt to use this skimmer without an ATO

ck, just shorten the tube leading to the skimmer from the pump by a few inches using a razor blade. Too deep and it won't pull as much air. Too shallow and it becomes very hard to adjust. Also, follow Chris' advice and get an ATO if you don't already have one.

ok the pic is a little rough but what does every one think of this set up? It will get the pump to the right depth and give me more room for live rock.

Yeah, looks good. You may want to consider putting a filter sock on your drain from the tank- otherwise debris will build up in the LR rubble.
