Costs of a 125g FOWLR

Too many variables that determine the cost. Could be 500 dollars or 5000 dollars.

Salt - $45
RODI Unit - $125
Tank/Stand/Strip light - $250 - $1000 (used or new depending)
Sand - $125 (~$1 per pound)
Heater - $20 - $50 (Used / New)
Sump - $50 - $300 (Used / New)
Pump - $50 - $150 (Used / New)
Live Rock - $200 - $500 (Second hand or from LFS)
Powerheads - $100 - $1000 (Korallia's/Vortech and again Used vs New)
Skimmer - $75 - $450 (Used Coralife or MRC MR-1 w/ pump)

The list can go on and on.. Basically in my opinion take your goal amount you want to spend and triple it, that is about what you will end up spending.

Jorge from pure reef recently said $30 per gallon, seems about right for reef tank, fowlr maybe not, but unless it's a predator tank, who keeps a fowlr

Here is a start for you....... :-)

If you buy a complete running system off someone, you should be able to get in for $800-$1000 for tank, stand, sump, lights, skimmer, pump and all the plumbing, live rock and sand. Check Craigs List regularly for a good deal. That is definitely the best way to get started when you don't know a lot. Especially because the person will sometimes throw in test kits, refractometers, water change setups, etc., which all together turn out to be expensive and often are forgotten when budgeting. Fish can run anywhere from $10 to $1000 each, but the common ones are $20-$50 (trigger, tang, lion, snowflake eel, foxface). Depending on the fish you could figure ten or so in a 125.

The best is a combo of new/used.

1.Tank - Buy new - Its no fun risking a leak with used one - $350
2. Stand - used - $250
3. Pumps - new - $150
4. Skimmer - used - $150
5. Liverock - used - $200
6. sump - used - $100
7. fish - used - $$
You can do everything under $1500.
