Just wanted to get opinions of those who use them. Im going to need one. Need to know the best one to get. I bought one 3 years ago and it lasted about 6 months before it started acting up..dont want one like that again..anyone have one that has lasted 2-3 years with heavy use?

It depends on the size room your needing it for. Regardless, get it at a big box with extended warranty, that's how long it will last!

Dehumidifiers today are JUNK. I agree with Camellia, whatever brand you buy, get the longest extended warranty they offer. You will be using it.

All humidifiers put a ton of heat into the room. I would consider one of those portable air conditioners that vent the heat to the outside yet dehumidify and cool the air inside your home.

I put one down in the basement a few years ago.. and it hasn't had any issues at all. I think it is GE, and I got it from SAMS club.

youre honestly better off getting a portable a/c unit than a dehumidifier. I spent $200 on one and it works decently, but the little portable a/c unit I stuck in the basement produces at least 3 times the water.

I dont even bother turning the dehumidifier on anymore.

Either way, be sure to pipe the drain somewhere so you dont have to empty it manually. It fills up in under a day usually.

someone post a link of these little ac units.
you mean just window units with the condensate drain plumbed somewhere?

I got a GE I think on clearance from Sears like 10 years ago. It ran constantly for years... My parents have it in their basement now and still use it.

I got this one because it heats and cools, but something like this. You duct the exhaust out somewhere(comes with a window adapter for that) and then you just pipe the drain out somewhere. Keeps my 1200 sqft basement at 72 very nicely since I have my workout gear down there along with the fish room.

I like that unit. Any idea how many watts it takes to run it? Is it viable to run it with a generator?

10.9 amps, you would need a decent size generator to run it but its doable.

Heat in the room is a REAL problem!
I've got a vacant house for sale with a full finished, carpeted basement. The dehumidifier alone wasn't cutting it. I used a small 2' hose (reel Extention) to run water to PVC installed under a window out of the house. If you have a sump pump already, that's the easiest way.
I added one of the large, round, black wire fans (HD & Lowes) $45. It kicks the air completely around the entire basement. This most likely won't work for most but ended my problem, day 1.

Carpet in basement ..
;)
As to the topic you CAN have a real dehumidifier installed on your ac unit (if you really want to address it)

So long, and thanks for all the fish.

I got my dehumidifier from costco. It died after 2 years and they still gave me a full refund... I pretty much buy everything from there that is applicable primarily because of the ease of taking it back.
