I plan on making a canopy for my 34 gallon red sea max. the previous owner kind of rigged it and it doens't look as nice so I just want to remove the top and make a canopy to cover up the top.

Anyways I have a few questions before I get started.
what type of wood? pine?
does it need to be pressure treated or no?
what about water proofing?
any other hints or tips?

When i built my canopy i used sanded pine and i was told to never use pressure treated wood because it will eventually leach chemicles( not sure if true or not but better be safe than sorry). Also i put a coat of kilz primer on the inside to protect it against the water and condensation. I use MH lights so i drilled some 4" holes in the top of the canopy to help heat escape and installed a fan at either end of the canopy to help circulate air.

check out my build. much larger than you need but will help you decide
