Our custom internal overflow for our 55gal. Will be in the middle of the back wall almost to the top. I must say my bf is such a good DIY'er

Yes, 1/4" acrylic. He figured out the size he wanted, cut the 3 pieces with skilsaw & the teeth. Glued it together w/ aquarium silicone. 1/4" spaces for the teeth and inch long. It is 3" deep, 6" wide & 19" tall.

Edit: He cut some acrylic braces for the bottom to help support it. It's much cheaper making it yourself.. doesn't necessarily have to be that tall just depends on where you want your overflow hole to be. This one will be will be touching the bottom of the tank.

You might want to take it apart and re-glue it with some acrylic solvent glue.

Silicone won't really adhere to acrylic very well, so you could be setting yourself up for a failure down the road.

Otherwise, nice job. :)

I hope you have good flood insurance.

Silicone doesn't adhere to acrylic

It will like others said most likely fail order some Weldon 16 from online its a little pricery but but worth it. The silicone is just not designed to adhere to it. Good job on the cutting but its only as strong as what holds it together

The worst possible scenario is if the silicone seal split apart, and now you have your entire tank volume of water draining unrestricted through the hole in the bottom of the tank...

Honestly Ive always liked a standpipe behind he overflow in the event a silicone seal breaks loose around the overflow the tank will still only drain out what it gets put in

So solvent glue vs weldon 16... which is preferred??

We do have an old aquarium that we can cut baffles out of & silicone to our sump and that'll be fine. We're going to remove the silicone from the overflow.. get another piece to form a back, use one of the 2 (weld. or solv.) to put them back together. Then, use the bulkhead for the overflow to hold them together. :) Atleast now we know....thanks everyone

Edit: Edit: Weldon 16 is what we'll have to use because he used a skilsaw to cut the acrylic

its the same, weld on is a solvent glue. Numbers define it's viscosity, 3 is thin, 16 medium, 40 almost a gel.

Bought Weldon 16 and added a back to it. Tank is drilled and bulkhead attached to overflow now. Thanks everyone.
