My friend has this star fish, looks like something chewed on it or something, any ideas? It still crawls around for now?

Yes, sea stars can get bacterial infections.

That looks rough. It could also be a fish or shifting rock that tore a hole in him. Regardless, if any sea star can recover, it’s a serpent. Those guys are resilient!

When sea stars get old (to my understanding and experience), they will start to break down and fall apart. It usually happens fairly quickly.

With various serpents species, this seems to happen after 7-15 years. With some other species, it’s closer to 1-2 years... and is the reason I stick with serpent sea stars. They’re generally cheaper and live longer.

It looks bad here. Nonetheless, hope he recovers.
