Do you use bio balls, sand or rocks for biological filtration? Or a combination of all three. They also sell those bio media plates which I believe has a lot of surface area for bacteria to live on.
For my tank I use some components from the "berlin method" of marine filtration. I rely heavily on rock for my tank. Every tank that I have set up I put a lot of rock in the display portion of the tank. I do not use bio balls or have anything for bacteria to really live on in the sump. I do have sand in the display but it is very little, just enough to cover the bottom glass.
