Does anyone have any information on a sweetlips fish? I just got one the other day and was told that they only get about 6 inches long. When I got home and googled it they say it gets to be 2.5-3 foot long. That is just a small difference.lol But most of the ones I have found are not like the one I have. The one site that I could find a pic of it called it an Oriental sweetlips fish. Any help would be great.

Enjoy him while he fits, then rehome him. Or take him back for an exchange since you based the purchase on what you were told by their sales staff.

I have read about them but not very much on the one I have. I bought it because I had not seen one like it before.

Juveniles are hard to get to eat prepared foods. They are definitely NOT reef safe.

What type of Sweetlips is it? There are several. Usually the Harlequin or Clown Sweetlips come into the trade.. Plectorhinchus chaetodonoides. They are cute when they are small but grow to 28.3' (Pocket Expert Guide to Marine Fishes, Scott Michael, p. 162.)

I don't think they will bother corals but your inverts are menu items, IF the specimen will eat.

I just found this name on Liveaquaria.com Dogfish Orientalis (Plectorhinchus lineatus)

so I guess that is the right name. The place I got it from said it was a sweetlips clown. So I thought most clowns dont get that big so I'll take it. Maybe I should of looked it up to start with. It is eating flakes right now and will not eat brine shrimp at all. Do you think it will be ok eating that? He will be going in the 150 gallon when I get it set up. I just hope he don't grow to fast beautiful colors now.

Grows to 2' 10" according to liveaquaria

If it's eating flakes, you're fortunate.

It's amazing how a simple error in word order can cause a major misunderstanding! First of all, it's not a "clown" anything, and your LFS was sadly uninformed about what they were selling you...but second of all, they called it a "sweetlips clown" instead of a "clown sweetlips", leading you to believe it was a kind of clownfish! Good grief!

Clown trigger, clown tang, clown loach (freshwater)... there are lots of clowns in the aquarium hobby.

I'm not singling you out, Peaches - we've all been guilty of impulse buys that didn't turn out so well... I know I did in the beginning - more than once.

Might be a good idea to pick up a pocket reference so you can look *while* you shop. I used to do that (esp. when a clerk once tried to sell me a Mandarin Dragonet to eat algae  )

A Pocket Expert Guide to Marine Fishes by Scott Michael is a good one, and for corals, Corals: A Quick Reference Guide by Julian Sprung is a good one.

I carry both books - could possibly ship to you... PM me if interested ;)
