Guys I have heard allot of back and forth about DOW Flakes. Many say Bromide is the culprit. Found a source nearby that has 50lb bags just sitting in their warehouse. Can this be used to keep calcium levels up? What are long term side effects if any? I know BRS uses this in there 2 part but if I could get a 50lb bag that would limit my expenses since it seems my tank is sucking up allot lately. Let me know your thoughts.

I use Randy Holmes Farley 2 part recipe with Calcium Chloride I got from the local pool store, but in his article he mentions the use of DOW flakes as an alternative as well. Here's the link.

You dont want to use that anymore. They used to extract the phosphate from it for sale elsewhere but have since stopped.

Ok, found 100% calcium carbonate at the pool store, is there anything I should look at for on these or will this work.

you would probably be better off asking in the RC reef chemistry forum.

Most pool chemicals / driveway de-icers dont list things like phosphates because it simply doesnt matter in those applications.

DOW flakes were the only one I knew of that were pure, but they no longer are. There may be others that will work but I cant say for sure.
