Out of curiousity, what are the pros and cons of drilling bottom vs side for the overflow? I can see that if a bottom drilled tank failed at the bulkhead, there is much more potential for a complete disaster, but what else?

Most tanks have tempered bottoms. You can't drill them.

Pre-drilled (reef-ready) tanks have the holes drilled by the manufacturer, and then the bottom is tempered afterward.

As such, for after-market drilling, the back or side is usually the only option.

Aaaaah! I have been misreading somewhere....(I thought tempered was the better one to drill) Still, are there other benefits to having a bottom drilled overflow system?
