Are they reef safe??

i just got back from peters house with some frags of stuff and he has already climbed what i think peter called frogspawn and he was nipping at it.

do i need to get him out of the tank?

haha i dunno it looked like he was nipping at the little green/blue tentacle looking things but he was also picking at the branch type things that the tentacles are coming off of.........does these crabs normally go well with reef tanks

No crab is reef safe. Emeralds are as close as they come however. Probably wasn't picking, but if you want to be safe banish him to the sump if you can catch him.

well i dont have a sump yet haha.........but peter gave me a pretty **** good lesson tonight i learned alot just talking to him for the 20 minutes or so i was there.

my next purchse will be a skimmer and some power heads..............so u think i should leave the crab in there for now

If he is nipping corals, he needs to go. You can put him in a plastic container if you have one in the tank. I often use gerbal balls from the pet store.

how do i catch him?? and is there anywhere i can trade him in to not completely lose all my money

lol that is a trick in its self if you see him on a rock ...branch pick the rock up sake it with a net under it ...anybody got anyother helpful thoughts

target feed in the corner..if he's like my picks he'll come running..

I have 3 emeralds in my 55g and their fave hangout is definitely the frogspawn. After almost 6 months, my FS is bigger than ever and there is no *picked upon* damage.

If it is sitting around the frogspawn then no worries. If it is picking at the soft part of the coral, get rid of it. The best way I know is to grab the rock he is on and get some needlenose pliers. Trying to catch one is very difficult.

Just my 2 cents...I had 2 on steroids (large) and never touch my corals...It would gently pick shrimp out of my suns mouths lol

I have never actually seen an emerald go after anything, but there are stories and no crab is truly reef safe.

Well after looking closely the past day or so he was just eating algae or something not attacking haha I was just paranoid. Thanks to peter for the great deal on the frags he sold me not really frag more like chunks haha a lot bigger than I expected

Good to hear. I have several emeralds in my tank and have never had a problem and the same is true from most hobbyiest I believe.
