Question. Emerald Crab, good or bad? I have a small amount of bubble algae that I would like gone. Is an emerald crab the answer or do the negatives out weigh the positive. I have a 75 gallon.

Let me know your thoughts.

I have never had any problems with Emerald crabs in my system, other than moving or knocking over frags that were not very well attached.

I've also never seen Emerald Crabs eat bubble algae. I recently put some in my frag tank and one rock that had green hair algae and bubble algae was stripped clean of the hair algae but they picked around the bubble algae. If it is just bubble algae you have then I would put a stiff piece of acrylic at the end of a syphon and get it out that way.

I know the theory is if you bust them trying to remove them then it will make more grow, but how can an Emerald Crab do it without busting them? Their mouths aren't big enough to eat them whole so as soon as the crab punctures them it will have the same effect.

OK, what I'm typing is my own experience and some that I have read (meaning other reefer's claims)

My experience: I have some in my chalice tank, but they have not wiped out the bubble algae. I think they eat some of it, but not all of it. I have not seen them eating other corals, etc other than knocking something over once in a while. But I have had them come out when I have tried to target feed a Rhyzotrochus and literally reach down into the Rhyzo's mouth and steal the food. My fire shrimp will do this as well.

Other Forum threads (not ARC) I have read state that Emerald crabs will eat other corals eventually, and will need removal from the tank.

Here is one such thread:

I like my emerald crabs and have watched them eat a bubble algae. It was pretty cool. They wiped mine out, but it was a very small infestation.

My emerald crab ate all my bubble algae in a matter of a week... I guess it depends on the animal's taste, but he was the best part of my cuc
