So I just can't bring myself to spend $22 on a piece of eggcrate with some magnets attached. I have eggcrate lying around my house. I started searching around and found these magnets.

I'm thinking 2 pairs of the 12mm x 3mm should be enough for a medium sized frag rack, and 3 pairs for a larger rack. They run $0.48 each and are rated at 14lbs of pull force. The 18mm magnets are rated at 20lbs and run $0.98 each.

They are epoxy coated and I was wondering if the epoxy will leach anything into the water that would be bad? I'm thinking of ordering several different sizes and seeing what works best, as these could easily be made for a very reasonable price, and look just as good as ones that cost $20 and up, plus you could make custom sizes/shapes.

My frag mag seems strong, but I'd be a little afraid of having a large coral attached to the back wall supported by just that, so these larger magnets seem like a viable alternative. Any thoughts or has anyone ordered from this company?

Epoxy is usually very inert. I wouldn't worry about it...

Cool. I already ordered some. I got a variety of sizes to test the strength on different thickness' of glass. Depending on how cheap these come out, I may be able to make these for members at cost as big or small as wanted.

Anybody with 1/2" thick glass want to test one?

I used them in my reef tank and they did fine but just to be sure I ended up sealing mine in acrylic as the epoxy layer wasn't very thick.

Hey...what did you come up with? Looks like a good DIY project.
I dont want to pay 22 bucks for an egg crate rack either. I tried to come up with a way to hang an egg crate shelf over the tank...but couldnt come up with anything stable enough.

Waiting on some pieces to get in stock. Apparently the ones I ordered were out of stock.

I hope to be bringing a few of different sizes to the February meeting to possibly sell for $5-10 a piece.

I was looking at doing the same project and found these magnets which were instock with 16 lbs force for $.70.

Hope this helps with future projects if your order is still back ordered.

Ok, well I settled on some N52 1/2" x 1/4" magnets with 19.7lbs of pulling force. I can coat them in plastic myself, and should have enough supplies to construct a few of these before the meeting on the 10th.

Stronger magnets needed. 1 magnet on the inside of the tank but 3 are needed on the outside. I do have a corner rack that I've been using for over a month now and it holds fine, but I need to get some bigger ones as I wouldn't trust this in someone else's tank
