so i was just cleaning the class and went to move this thermometer and the top just broke right off. its one of those kind thats glass and has a red layer as the bottom separating the little black balls... what is that? i guess it was really old. is smells like rotten eggs inside. is this toxic? AH!

its just like this
prod_display.cfm

just get it all out and do a decent size WC-you should be ok--be careful, though-- a 12-gallon can go south pretty easily!

im already preparing for one! ive never had a major problem in my tank but i know that since its so small something like this could get me out of the business so to speak

yeah--just keep a check on params. --I would get another one ready too-just do a series of 2 or 3 Wc's for the next couple days--the main thing is get all that stuff out!

I broke one in my tank to no ill effect. However, the little "balls" in the red stuff that went everywhere started to rust after a week or so. Fortunatly it was in my sump so I drained it and dabbed the little rust balls out with filter floss. If you do a water change and get as many of those balls as you can you should be good to go. Not sure how bad rust is but I used steel hose clamps for years that rusted through so bad that eventually they broke off. Maybe that's why my majano's seem to be some super strain...

the red seal didnt break on mine, just the top. so there arent any little balls anywhere thankfully! i changed a third of the water today and nothing shows signs of stress so i think im going to be ok. whew!
