External Pump Install Help

So I finally got the new tank plumbed yesterday. I drilled the sump I had and installed a 1" bulkhead to feed the new external pump. After I let everything dry I turned the pump on. The noise is over bearing. The noise isn't directly coming from the pump but from the sump. In the chamber the external pump is pulling from I now have a loud hum.

My question is if anyone else has a 90 elbow like I installed before the pump? Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated. I got this external pump so it would hopefully be quite. I'm running 1" all the way to a tee that feeds 3/4" too two returns into the display.

i would have ran a size larger for the feed of the pump just to make sure that it has plenty of water. but your run is short so you should be good. also do you have anything under the pump to muffle the vibrations. brs sells vibration blocks and you could use some 1/2 to 3/4" ridge foam ins. since the pump is outside of the sump but the brs blocks work good for internel pump noise for future refferance.

Assuming the pump is ok, and that there was water in the sump, that 90 should not cause any problems.

The water in the sump will baffle the hum, however I suggest you to get a mouse pad and cut to size to fit under the pump itself. If possible, silicon it in place.

I made sure to have a 1/2" of felt under the pump. When I listen to the pump outside the sump it's quite. When I listen in the sump you can hear that the hum is coming from the draw pipe and echoing out of the sump.

Perry , I see nothing wrong with your setup. I have a Dart Gold on one side of my sump and a Pan World on the other with a 90 degree feed and I have zero hum or vibration. What I would suggest is placing some blue building foam from Lowes under the sump to help stabilize the sump and help cut down on any vibration. I would also suggest placing something under the pump to also assist with any vibration.

Hey Perry I just tried to call you. Your setup is the way I had the pump plumbed on my setup. Question, are you running this dry or is the noise happening with the sump full of water? That's a magnetic pump and it will make noise if run dry. Let me know, if the pump is having a problem I have no issues with giving you your money back. Just PM'd you after the voicemail. Like I stated in this thread I don't think it's the pump. I didn't even turn the pump on until the sump was full. I do have a ton a of micro-bubbles right now but by no means is the pump running dry. I'll try the foam under the sump tonight and update you after that.

I had a mag 9.5 that had a slight noise but only when it was getting low on water

Ok just wasn't sure they way I read the post. If I can help just let me know. Makes sense about possible vibrations. I really don't see any issues with your plumbing that would cause the noise. Also if you need another set of eyes or some help I wouldn't have a problem helping you out tomorrow or Sunday.

I have couple good suggestions. The first one I'm going to try is putting flex PVC in the intake and exit of the pump. This will hopefully cut the harmonics. If that doesn't work I'll be pulling the sump to put a foam pad under it.

The corian sitting directly on that hard wood floor is some of your noise.

Adding a couple pieces of flex PVC at the intake for the pump and also on the exit of the pump reduced the noise.

Still working on a couple ideas for that. For now the refugium part of the sump will just be my ATO container. Should give me a week's worth of top off or more from that sized compartment.

My other option was going to be building a small removable shelf that my 2.5 gallon tank can sit on above the gate valve in the back left corner. Only problem with this is filling it.

This was a video I took before I redoing the plumbing. You can see the manifold and then a coupler and gate valve so I can remove the manifold if I need to and remove the pump if I need to separately.

You can also hear the HUM I was talking about when starting this thread.
