Saw this thing growing out of the top of my monti a few days ago. Looks like a little gray feather with a maroon base. I've looked, but I can't find anything that looks like this.

Anybody know what this is?

Thanks guys. Having read wmboots' thread(s), I panicked when I read bryopsis. From all I've read since then, though, this doesn't seem</em> like bryopsis. It's the wrong color, it didn't start on the sand bed, and the area where it's growing doesn't seem like it would collect detritus. I've also read enough to know, though, that the variation in reef life frequently defies description.

How sure are you that this is bryopsis?

It's hard to tell 100% From the pic. And yes, there are numerous types of bryopsis and hair algae.

I had bryopsis a while back, and my original out break came from a frag plug from one of the popular LFS. It doesn't always have to origionate in the sand bed, though once it makes it there it will take off.

Worst case scenario: I'm right, you only have a small isolated patch, it will be easy to remove and nip the scenario in the bud.

Best case scenario: I'm wrong and a snail or tang eats it for you.

But if I am right, and you treat it like I'm wrong, we'll be patiently awaiting a thread titled: bryopsis, burn with fire???!?!

Or "Pay It Forward Part III" :)

Thankfully it's on a rock that I can easily remove, so I'll just pull it out, carefully break off that piece of monti, and put it back in.

Is that would you would do?

Perfect plan! Make sure you try to remove any piece of rock that looks like its roots have spread to. The monti should recover quickly, and of your grows like mine, you won't even notice a little chunk missing in a month

That purple cap I gave you? Yeah, that thing is a pest in my tank!! If I didnt like the rock it was on, I'd pull it out.

Every 2 months I break a 8"x8" down to a nub, and I grows right back.

Actually I was referring to my orange one just like the one in the pic up above but yes, that purple one grows fast too. Now wait a minute...... you gave me a pest????? LOL

Alright, the infection has been removed. And despite being gray for 3 days or more, when I went to take it out, it had indeed turned green. Hopefully this is the end of it!
