Has anyone tried feeding their tangs vegetables ( carrots,lettuce,etc...). If you do feed them vegetables what and how often? Thanks

I would feed them lettuce once a week. Ive seen Simon at nemo aquarium feed tangs lots of veggies

I feed romaine lettuce a few times a week alternating with nori on the other days. I have fed broccoli before but only the yellow tang seemed to like it so I haven't repeated it.

Never tried personally... I don't think it would hurt as long as you don't leave it in there if they don't eat it.

I've heard people say to boil the food before feeding it. I might try feeding a small carrot.

Why not feed them algae sheets? It's better to feed them their natural diet.

Just interested in expanding their diet.
I tried carrots and they nipped at it a little but not much.

The nori sheets are much better as far as nutrition, but there's nothing wrong with feeding lettuce, it's actually what people used to do before nori was popular.

Have you ever seen pellets, flakes or frozen cubes on a reef?

There are mixed opinions about feeding terrestrial foods.

No, fish won't find flakes, pellets or frozen cubes on the reef, but those are usually composed of ingredients that do occur in fishes' natural diet.

Back 100 years or so ago when I started in the hobby (*g*) we fed romaine lettuce but we froze it first, then thawed it. I was told that freezing it breaks the cell walls and makes it a bit easier to digest. I don't know if that's true or not.

The cellulose is difficult to digest and there isn't a whole lot of nutritional value in the lettuce. It's fiber, mainly.

IMO Nori or live macro algae are better choices.

I have seen people feed frozen (thawed) peas to puffers and triggers, and they seem to love them.

I'm not sure a tang could eat a carrot slice. Shreds, perhaps... haven't seen it done.

Just keep in mind with any food introduced, if it's not eaten within a short period of time, remove it, so it doesn't decay and foul the water.

Thank you Jenn for clearing things up for me. Leveldrummer, I'm sorry for the rude comment.
