How much water are your filter socks sitting in?

Is there a benefit to leaving them hanging in the water column of the sump?
I can't stand seeing videos of socks pulled, releasing dirty water in the sump.

All of mine sits in the water when I actually use them.
Now since I'm doing auto water changes I just put a sock in a 4" pvc with half cut on the bottom and just siphon bare bottom and then dump the bucket into the sump:

Used to do that until I was paying more attention to what I was siphoning and missed the sump and filled up my old 90g stand lol. Little easier with a bucket in front of my feet

Mine are about half way down in the water and I change them about every third day. I cycle through 4 of them. When I put my 4th one in, I toss the other 3 in the clothes washer on hot with no soap....then reuse.
