I have recently added a filter sock to my system. I was wondering if anyone in the club washes them in the washing machine. i had an LFS tell me this is cool. I only worry due to the soap left in the washer. Any input would be great and thanks in advance.

Thanks,
Mike

I turn them inside out... (find some interesting things that way).

I let the nylon socks air dry, and put the felt socks into the dryer... no fabric softener.

Washer with bleach. Sometimes I use the fancy no-chem detergent, but rarely. Both soap and bleach are optional. Plain water will suffice as you are only trying to get a mechanical clean.

Air dry - no point wasting energy to dry them.

We bleach, 2 rinses and Prime in both (to kill the chlorine) then air dry.

The bleach helps to oxidize the schmutz out, and whitens them again. It's arguably not necessary to bleach but I find they come cleaner (not just whiter) with bleaching.

I've discovered (although I use filter cloth instead of the sox) that if you have an issue with them clogging quicker and water not being filtered through as quickly after they have been cleaned (I think it's the weave of the cloth shrinking) you caN FIX IT BY NOT ALLOWING it to dry. 2 rinses, and into a plastic bag to keep it moist. That way, it's clean and filters like new everytime. If you feel mildew might be an issue, just rinse it again before you put it in your tank (although I'm uncertain if mildew would have any effect at all in a tank).

Thanks for all the great ideas!! I washed in plain water this time due to it only being in the tank for a week. It was clogged from the new live sand. All is well and will be buying more socks so that I can keep a clean one at all times.

Thank you Thank you for all the quick responses
Mike
