What do you use for a filter if you don’t have a sump? I have a canister on my tank but I don’t think it does much except catch a little bit of stuff on the inlet to the filter when I clean it out there is not much in it. So I guess my ? Is, I’m about to install a HOB refugium and a GFO reactor. Do I need this filter? I have been running it for months with only pads and floss in it. And like I said it’s not doing much (except trapping food it sucks up...)

I used to use a canister filter with two layers of that blue/white poly filter pad material. It seemed to me like it caught quite a bit. One time I tried to rinse it by squeezing it out in old tank water and there was quite a bit in it. For the cost I ended up throwing it away and making a new one each time but I would rinse and reuse the sponges. What kind of canister filter is it?

When I used a canister filter I kept the sponges and filled the chambers with seachem Matrix, and put filter floss in the top chamber which I changed weekly. This gave me a large amount of biological filter.

Marineland filter

I've always ran Rena's and Fluval's but I'm sure there's a section where you can put polishing-type mechanical filtration. Get some of that that blue/white poly-filter and add it. You'll be impressed with how much it catches.

I just added some and also some GFO and carbon. Algae is starting to bug me don’t have much but also don’t want it to get out of hand. I guess we will see how it goes till I reseal the 120 I got and start building it next year

Everything seems to be ok in the tank and my Duncan (if it is a indicator coral) is open and happy as ever. I need to test phosphates but my wife put the test kit under the tree... lol
