So I've had my clown pair, carpenters wrasse and flame angel together since February and now my flame is up in a corner of my tank with what looks to be scratches on its sides and the wrasse is hiding under my rock with just my clowns out in the open. I have not seen any issues except at feeding. But what can I do to stop any more issues? I've got a pretty small yellow tang in my frag tank I could put in but I don't want to make things worse. On top of this I'm heading out of town this weekend so I need a quick simple solution.

Thanks,
Colin

Are they about to breed? My old pair of clowns used to turn into devastators right before and during a spawn.

I don't think so cause they don't host in anything. The just normally stay in 1 corner of the tank.

I've decided that it is my clowns harassing both the flame and wrasse. So what can I do to stop it?

How long have you had them? I'm still voting for sexual maturity. Clowns will lay with out a host.

Edit: As far as stopping them... There's not much you can do other than move the bully or move the bullied.

1 is like 4.5 years old and the other I can't remember I got it from Baboon Science in 2010 sometime.

Maybe someone else can enlighten us on ways to tame the angry clown syndrome, but in my experiance, it's hard to calm them.

Maybe giVe them a host? Of course that could back fire as well.

That's the problem I have a BTA and a huge wall hammer and they won't host in either.

This is a risk a lot of people won't take but have you ever tried a ritteri?

I don't know what kind of space you have, or would be willing to give, but I've never seen a clown resist a ritteri. This is only based on my experience and speculation, but I have yet to seen it disproven.

Getting the clowns out will solve that issue as well. I've been trying to catch mine everyday for the past week. They know what's going on.

I might have to resort to the trap. They aren't bothering any fish, but they won't leave my elegance alone. It's tolerating it.... For now.

If they are that old and spawning, Jamescook may trade you for a juvi pair.

That's the problem they are not spawning at least to my knowledge.

If they are 4 years old and all of the sudden showing extreme aggression I'd wager a worthwhile bet that they will very soon.

So I got busy today and forgot to look at the tank with the lights but did a flashlight check and the flame and wrasse are still good. But only saw the male clown which is weird cause the female always comes to the flashlight. No big deal though. Ill keep the flame over the clowns any day.

Oh yeah lots of rock. It very well could be I'll keep everyone posted.

When my pair used to spawn, they would lay the eggs, upside down, on a piece of shelf rock about 6" from their host.

I've seen clowns lay on the bottom glass of a tank. They moved the sand out of the way.
