hi there, i need to identify a little fish in my tank, but i can't get a picture for the life of me.

the little fella is shaped kinda like a bullet flattened out a little, he's dark gray with no spots or stripes. his tail is the most identifying feature. it is dark gray on the dorsal and ventral aspects, but just a line all the way to the end. the middle membrane is see through from the tip of the tail till about a finger tip away from where it joins, then it's bright yellow.

the fish is a skittish fella and he spends most of his time hiding in rocks. he has his own little territory and ducks his head in and out of his cave when he thinks i am not looking.

sorry to do it this way, but i can't get a clear pic cos he's so fast. and every time i pull out the camera, Domino wants to make sure i am taking HIS photo..

try liveaquaria.com and look thru the marine fish - they have tons of pics - im sure you will at least be able to nail down the species there

Agreed. Check out blennies & gobies at LA. Off the cuff, I'll throw out scooter blenny.

i couldn't find him on LA, but i will keep trying sites. i am wondering if maybe i have a female and they are different somehow to the male. i do have the camera standing by..

he's like the harptail blenny, but he has longer fins, and the dorsal fin and ventral fins are more shaped like a betta than a blenny... yikes, i suck at descriptions

take a pic! no matter if it is bad or not we can tell what it is with little something to go by.

Just get any sort of pic these guys are awesome at the I.Ding of anything they IDed a zoa in my tank off a blurry picture taken by my old camera phone while it was less than 1CM big. Amazing what these guys can do.

hopefully that works :)
that's the little guy

Looks more like a chromis to me. Maybe Chromis xanthopterygia? Certainly not one that is available very often.

It looks like a damsel... of the Fighting Irish variety... They don't belong to any particular genus or group of fish, preferring to be loners - but wanting the respect of the more colorful and dominant families of fish. Although they are said to have many followers all over North America, they have a tendency to hide underneath the rocks until everything looks good for them, and then you can't get them to go away.

:D

that might just be it, you know. he's a gray color with the yellow and a couple of white spots on his tail, dorsal side.
