Is it absolutely necessary to have live rock in a fish only tank? If not, what kind of filtration would you suggest - wet/dry, bio balls etc...?

Come on... Need some advice... don't you like your Augusta neighbors? =)

U dont have to do live rock. I would do the normal sump/skimmer. But u could get get away with hob filters if the tank isnt drilled

It is possible to run a tank without live rock. I'm unsure as to why someone would want to though. Live rock looks natural and provides ample surface area upon which beneficial bacteria can grow.

Other types of filtration mentioned (HOB filters, bioballs, etc) require regular upkeep/cleaning/maintenance in order to maintain proper levels of nitrates.

Of course you can run a tank without live rock! As stated by everyone, you'll need a sump with media that functions like live rock though. Either bioballs, sintered glass or Seachem's Matrix.

In that sense, it is no different than filtering a freshwater tank.

When you decide on filtration, what fishes will you be keeping in your fish only tank? I'm a big fan of trigger fishes, or pray tell, will it be a puffer, eels, or my all time favorite, sharks :D?
