Flame Angels

So these past few months have been hectic... Mostly on my black and white misbar clowns.. why? After days of observing, it looks as if the flame angel who was put in the tank AFTER the clowns by about 4 months decided it was time to pick on them by keeping them at the bottom of the tank, cornered.

After careful consideration I decided that I was goin to move the angel over to my other reef system that has two larger clowns and a harptail blenny and zoas... Hopefully the shock of me goin in the big tank removing some rock and picking the angel out and moving him across the room in to the foyer didn't shock him to bad, plus he jumped carriage and fell to the floor... looks ok just a little dizzy, of course me turning on the lights prolly didn't help either.

Any who, what are your thoughts on why the clowns were being 'harassed' for lack of a better word. Also, it seemed as if it was trying to host' the clowns... like the way clowns host an anemone, actually all started 2 months after the addition of the first anemone.

Looking at your sig was he in the 25 and then moved to the 90? If so it was territorial stress and he was dominating and yes he will be better off in the larger tank. Keep him well fed. Mine is and nips at nothing

The clowns were the first addition after upgrading from a 10g in February of '09. The Angel was later added in Late april iirc of last year. Just recently started to mess with the clowns. I moved the angel over to the 25 to see how it interacts with the larger clowns and see if I need to sell it or not. If he acts good for a while, I will try him in the 40 again. I like the angel, hasn't ate any SPS, LPS or softies. I have plenty of sponges growing that it can eat and loves to pick at algae off the glass. Also, I feed heavy any way so it get way plenty to eat. I have slacked on feeding as I am feeding primarily flakes and to keep the bad algae down I dont feed every day.. every other day to every third day, depends on what I have done that day. Once I run out of flakes, on last bottle, i will start on frozen again, then switch to something else and continue to rotate for variety and nutrition.

Try pellets and upping the feeding. Cutting down feedings to battle water quality is a temporary solution to the algae. If your filtration can't keep up long term and your time doesn't allow for frequent water changes to allow for feeding often then trade the fish away.

Agreed. Not feeding fish so that nutrient levels can go down isnt a good husbandry technique for fish. And, without feeding, that angel is gonna find some food. In one way shape or form.

in my limited experience, I found our flame angel to be far more active and agressive than the clowns, and he chased the clowns around a lot more than we were comfortable with. We eventually pulled it out and sold it.

Funny enough, the only fish that would challenge the flame was the lawnmower blenny, and he is one tough cookie...
