Fluval Overflow freakin out here

Ok i have a 36 gallon tank. An emperor 400 filter with the carbon filters and polyfilters in it, a skimmer, and a fluval 280. The tank has been up for about two months.. maybe a little longer. All of my parameters have been in range since ive set it up.. theyve been very good actually. I havent done a water change yet since i have so much filtration and the nitrates/trites have always been normal. Today i go to change the filters in the fluval for the first time. I unplug it, and then un clip the top and BOOM its like a dam breaks. Water keeps pouring out.. more and more all over the place. Its unplugged so i dont understand where all the water is coming from. I lost about 10 gallons or so.. maybe a little more. I fixed up some more water, thank goodness i had plenty on hand. Though it was all i had left. I filled the tank back up. Everything looks fine. I checked the salinity, and its fine. Is there any chance this was too much of a water change? Will it hurt anything in the long run? Thanks for your help. I know this is kind of a newbie question.. but ive never been in a situation of "too much" of a water change.

That's a little under 30% wc. It won't hurt nothing. Although you should do your wc more often. The idea is to keep your system clean by doing wc not wait until you see signs of ammo and the works before you do a wc. By then it's already too late in most cases.

Now for the cleaning of the filter. That's one of those canister filters right? If that's the case, did you lock all the lines to and from the canister before opening it? If you didn't then it would create a siphon and that's why your water kept on coming out.

no i didnt, i forget to lock the hoses before i unlocked the top. Thats exactly what happened.. thanks for the info. Ill definitely keep that in mind. I was freaking out water was going everywhere and wouldnt stop. Stressful start to the morning. Anyways.. thanks again. I definitely wont make that mistake again.

yeah im just glad i had enough water to replace it.. i dont guess it would have hurt anything having the water low until 12:00 when the store opens but i wouldnt wanna risk it anyways. The water actually looks A LOT clearer... dunno why. I guess maybe this was one of those "Everything happens for a reason things." LOL

Yes, and it would stay that way and everything will be happier and healthier if you did about 10% -15% WC every week. I do about 18% on my tank each week. Skimmer barely even pulls anything out.
