For those that bought the low boys do you think it would hold taking off the plastic braces? Or at least the top one?

I wouldn't, the glass isn't very thick and flexes even with the brace.

I wouldn't either. The quality level on that tank is nothing compared to the rimless ones.
Although...I'm not sure how much support that plastic brace is providing...
