Thinking about setting up a 20 gallon frag tank, roughly 20" x 20". Was thinking about going with either a maxspect nano or kessil a150...thoughts and/or suggestions?

What's on your DT? I would use as close to DT lighting as possible.

I'm running a Maxspect 160w on my DT...I guess that answers that question.

Next question: would the maxspect 60w be enough for a a 20x20x9?

I'm happy with my Kessil's. That new celestial maxspect has looks pretty cool too.

The new radion is awesome..just not wanting to spend 450 on lighting

Try one of those 120w Chinese LED setup from Taotronics or any other similar brand if you want to experiment with a cheaper option. I've had my Taotronic on the frag tank for over two years now. Still running strong. At first I used the Kessil 150, but after a while, I found that they didn't do a good job of getting the corals to encrust.

After realizing i probably won't be able to sell my 37 gallon setup for much of anything, I'm debating on just turning it into a frag tank and purchasing an LED to cover it...Does anyone see a potential problem with this? Would the 120w LED still work? What other cheap but good lights are out there for 30" coverage?

Would create a "step" like setup with egg crate

It should be fine. Here is a pic of 120w that I was testing over my 38g Nuvo.
