Frag Tanks- Bare Bottom or Substrate?

Do you guys recommend running sand in a frag tank, or bare bottom?

My current set up is a 49g with overflow, no sump. Hope to add one eventually! That being said, I have minimal surface area/live rock available for bacteria. Would it be detrimental to remove the sand? Main reason would be to make cleaning easier.

I've got a 40 breeder with hob so I added rubble rock to the bottom. Still a pain to keep clean below the rack.

I use Seachem Matrix in HOBS, tons of surface area.
