I purchased a Hawaiian Lace Sea Star over six months ago from a LFS. He has been an excellent reef inhabitant, leaving all my corals alone. He hasn't eaten a single thing he's not supposed to... the problem is, he hasn't eaten anything at all. (That I know of) It is supposed that this creature consumes bacterial film, but no one is sure of that.

I committed the cardinal sin of purchasing a specimen that I didn't know how to care for, so I reached out to WetWebMedia for advice. Bob Fenner responded to my query, but could not provide a positive species ID, nor any assistance on what the sea star might eat.

Recently, I've noticed that the star appears to be actually shrinking. This is clearly a sign of decline. So, since I am not able to provide adequate nutrition for this creature, I would like to offer him to an experienced reefer. He is definitely not on his death bed, so I hope giving him to a more advanced reefer might save him from getting there. I'm estimating that he is 8-9 inches in diameter, and will need a large tank with plenty of live rock.

The sea star is free, although a softie frag or two would be cool.
