So, about a 1/2" piece came off today. Just a piece of one of the tips. Just wodering if it will grow a new base, or is it pretty much dead, and should be removed?

you said a pice of one of the tips, are you talking about the tentacles? If yes then it will just disintegrate in your tank.

If there's any calcareous growth attached, it would continue to grow.

Nope. Bright green and purple. What causes brown and gooey?

brown jelly crap as long as it isn't your fine. also right at the end there should be a part that is more fleshy and probably slimy to the touch.
