Fuge Substrate - Mud v. Sand

Is the mud substrate that much, or any, better than live sand? If not, and I use sand, should I put it in a tray like people do with the mud?

I dont have a lot of personal experience but from my understanding the main draw back to miracle mud is that you have to replace it occasionally or it loses the miracle and just becomes mud, or extra fine grit sand if you will.

Otherwise yes, especially if you want to do planted macros and the like it has advantages over sand.
