is it ok to run my APEX from a generator ?

You should. It will remember your programming but unless you have your router hooked up to the generator you won't be able to monitor or change anything.

I'm going on memory here...generator power is unfiltered and can be subject to spikes, which is why I've generally heard you should not run electronics on a generator. I would not run my APEX off generator power unless Neptune gave the okay. They make inverter generators that filter the power, which would be okay.

This is true.When i had my battery chargers plugged in my generator,it killed them do to the surge of power.

you can run all electronics computers etc, so long it is a generator-inverter the voltage is regulated on this type generator it produces dc power and converts it to ac they are more costly

Surge protector will not help with small fluctuations. An inverter type generator is the best bet for straight generator power. However a standard alternator feeding a UPS will work also.

Get a Honda or Yamaha Inverter. My EU2000i has saved the day before and is ready to handle 2 heaters and main circulation pump. Pumps are also quite sensitive to dirty power.

I was reading that this could be dangerous to the people trying to repair your power. You could send electricity to a power line that is assume not to have power and cause harm to the person repairing it.

Running it through the panel will not reduce the amount of transient voltages or harmonics. Transient voltages and harmonics are what messes with sensitive electronics. If I could get by without my controller I would do so but if I really needed to run it I would. The chances of it doing damage to the controller are not great.

He said he has an "interlock" switch. If what he means is the he has a Transfer Switch he is fine. A transfer switch disconnects your home from the utility power lines and to the generator.

But, this is a very good point. If you tie to your panel without disconnecting from the utility you will be putting power on there lines. This will travel back to the transformer. A transformer will than tank the voltage you are providing and increase it drastically sending it back in the main lines. Should a power company worker grab that wire thinking it is dead he could be injured. However they should take precautions to avoid that by grounding that wire before he touches it. That would most likely ruin you generator. Or, if the power comes back on you would have a "Big Bang" and be looking to buy a new generator.
