GFO in an AIO

I was wondering if I could put GFO into the media bag that goes into the media boxes of my 30g AIO. Right now I'm ruining two bags of carbon and two bags of ceramic rings. Could I do one bag of carbon and one bag of GFO? Or? I don't know. That's why I'm asking.

I have a small bag of GFO on a media rack under the floss in my bc14. Just be mindful of using the right amount. I had a postage scale handy ( don't ask why ) to measure out what's needed. You don't want to strip the stuff out of your water too fast.

You can run GFO in a media bag, but here is why it is not as effective as running it in a reactor (according to what I just read)

The GFO needs to be loose. If it's packed tightly in a bag then the water just runs around it rather than through it. With proper placement it could be effective.

I just read that other thread about gfo in a reactor. I just don't think that a reactor is needed on this tank. Seems like overkill.

FWIW I read the same thing three times on three dif forums. it clumps together in a media bag and the water doesn't move around it.

Edit: so basically you aren't getting the full potential. doesn't mean it wouldn't work at all. placement would be key.

Placement would be my main reason for not getting it then. It would just replace one carbon bag. But like you said the water would just be falling on top of it.

definitely make room for the gfo by removing those ceramic rings, that's what your live Rock is for

You know, I have never thought about that until just now.

no problem...lol
if you have any stability laying around go ahead and dose that, on anything bigger than a 14 I wouldn't worry about removing so much bacteria but that's a pretty small tank.

What would that do for me?
