I picked up a small one of these to turn the sand in my chalice tank. I have two Vortech MP40Ws in this tank (turned down to 50%) and it looks like a dust storm in the tank when he is out sifting. Substrate never looked better though.

I guess be careful what you wish for, you just may get it!

How long has he been in there? The storm should end in about 2 weeks when all the trapped goodness has been unleashed from the top inch

Yup, my white sleeper goby made a mess of my tank for a few weeks. Now as he swims around and sifts, the sand is nice and clean.

It has only been in there about a week.

You're halfway there. Throw a large pellet in there for him. Now that is cool to watch.
Looks like he is swishing around candy at super speed

Have a sand bed and no fish that are aggressive towards smaller fish. Six lines and damsels have been known to harrass them. Then again I think my damsel would steal my wallet if it had the chance. The thing has streamers for god sakes!

I have a six line in the tank. I hope ther is no problem. But I've never seen a six line harass anything but another wrasse, especially a six line. I'll keep my fins crossed.

ok this is the same thing as a sand sifting goby right?
i do have 1 humbug, but my clown keeps him in check.
how do you feed these fish? what do they eat other than sifting sand?
how much free sand space do they need? will they go in the caves and clean too?

Mainly read of damsels because the sandsifters are such easy targets. Only once witnessed a sixline, but it was old with pronounced teeth and liked no newcomers.
Feeding- sinking pellets work great

We have had one going on 3 yrs now that went from about 2" to about 7" today. He has been in the same tanks as my 6 line ans a humbug with no problems at all.
I will tell you that they will dig borrows udder your rock work to sleep in and after a while it should eat anything you put in the tank.
Mine goes to the nori clip and bits a plug of it off and "sucks" on it for a while until a tang comes by and takes it.
This is one of my favorite fish in the tank,it has a lot of personality.

Dave, I kept going back and forth between the Golden-headed Sleeper and a Diamond Goby. I ended up with a Diamond Goby and it really made a mess in my 29G QT for four weeks. I just moved it to the 120G display on Friday and it is keeping a sandstorm going in there as well. So far it has stayed on the left side of the tank and the sand really looks good there so I'll be glad when he moves to the right side. I also run two MP40s. I really think once he churns it all up for a while the sand will settle down especially once he has all of his burroughs dug out.

I ended up with a gold head as well...awesome fish! Made his home under my squamosa, kinda cool. He does on purpose though, dump all the sand he sifts on my clams....stupid fish. But he does keep the sand super clean! Mine eats just about anything in the tank that I feed, even picks at the hair algae I have in the tank. I have a FAT super mean 6 line in my tank, and there hasn't been an issue yet.

you will soon learn to hate that fish....after a month of him dumping sand all over every rock and coral in my tank I spent 8 months trying to catch him.

never again.
