Good reef tank?

Someone can correct me if I am wrong, but with the RSM, isn't a chiller going to be a necessity because of heat buildup, and the stock protein skimmer is not very good? That is what I have heard, but I have never owned one.

PureReef in Alpharetta has two different RSM tanks set up. I would stop in there and talk to them. They will tell you if those two issues I pointed to are valid or not. They won't blow smoke just to make a sale. Very honest and straightforward LFS.

That one I have seen was modified with two fans in the back and an upgraded skimmer. I believe it was a Tunze skimmer. Really nice tank though with all different kinds of coral growing.

+1

Here is my 2 cents. Not sure that it's worth a whole 2 cents but here ya have it.

I started last September with a BioCube 29.
It was and still is a decent little saltwater/reef tank.

My wife is the decorator.
She started finding more corals that the BioCube could contain.

So...we were both thinking of getting a larger tank. Little did I know she too was thinking of the RSM 250.

So...Last February we bought the RSM 250 and never regretted it.
And yes, we the top closed, the temps can hit 82-84 without much trouble at all. About 2 weeks ago we added a chiller to keep the temps closer to 78.

So far, all the corals and the recently added clam have been loving it. I like it because it's clean and simple. Self contained. No extra hardware visible unless you add it.

I'm loving it.

Here is mine as of this evening.

Thanks. It's a wee bit over stocked and growing.
I suspect that in 6 months or so we'll be giving stuff away just so that everyone has a little elbow room. But for now, it's fun to watch and the best part is that we do not have room for anything new.

No more spending $$ on livestock. :-)

We paid about $489 for the chiller. It came with a pump and free UPS shipping.
This is the one that we bought:

RedSea suggests a larger chiller but based upon suggestions around my area, the 1/10 should be more than enough to drop the temps a few degrees.

So far, it's been doing a stellar job. I never hear it. I only know that it's come on when the lights dim. :-0

heres my old rsm 250.i used to run a jbj 1/15 hp on it and it cooled it just fine.a lot smaller than they recommend but i had it from a previous tank and it worked well.

Good grief man!
And I thought I had a lot going on in my 250! Looks great!

Is that with stock lighting reefer man? That's an impressive system. Did the chiller fit in the cabinet?

yeah, that was stock everything, except chiller and calcium reactor.i used ATI bulbs, not rsm bulbs.chiller will fit in the cabinet but i didnt have it in there.i broke that tank down about 2 1/2 years ago so it is no more.
