Good skimmer instead of filter?

After taking a year off from the hobby, my buddy is giving me his 56 gal tank. I have a large sump from an old tank but it's to big to fit under the stand. So I was thinking about going with a good octopus HOB skimmer and skip the filter. I'll definitely go with sand, lots of LR and I'm thinking about going with a MP60 for a power head for plenty of circulation. Any thoughts or concerns with my plan? Thanks

The filter is the "heart" of your system. IMO it's not something you can skip. Can you old sump be modified so that it would fit? What about turning it long ways and letting some of it stick out the back of the stand? In reality, the filter (ie sump) and skimmer are certainly two places that you can't skimp on.

Is the tank driller? What size will fit? I probably have an old tank or sump. I may would give or trade you one. I have SEVERAL sitting around. But I would NOT go without it....

Just my $.02

An mp 60 on a 57 gallon is probably not going to work. I typically see people debating between the smaller and medium ones, on a tank that size. If you have been away for a while, have you seen the jebao wave makers and/or the maxspect gyre?

Do you think the MP 60 is an overkill? I never heard of those two power heads. I use to use koralia powerheads.
