Growing your own phytoplankton

I'm wondering who is doing this and how much effort it takes you. I know it's a savings over buying. Where did you get your originating culture?

Is anybody doing zooplankton too? Same questions.
 
I used to. It's not difficult, just another process to do. I've still got phyto if you want a culture.

James...what did you use as your culture? I've read where some people just use some from one bottle to start another.
 
Yeah you split it to keep it growing. Mine's been growing for years and came from John Lauth. It's probably a mix of nano,tet,etc

I just ordered my starting culture so hopefully in about a week, I'll have it split off and growing my own.
