Dr. Tim presented chemistry basics for freshwater and saltwater aquariums it was a very interesting presentation - Some of his more interesting opinions:
ICP testing is best used for detecting heavy metals.
Prime inhibits nitrifying bacteria, it's overused in the hobby.
Protein skimmers filter out beneficial bacteria, Dr. Tim recommends turning skimmers off at night for coral tanks.
Sulfur Denitrification is very good and efficient, but must be post processed through calcium to raise the pH before exiting into the tank.
High bacterial diversity in tanks can lead to unstable systems, bacterial diversity decreases over time and as long term bacterial species take over, the system becomes more stable.
Waste Away is best used when aquarists are over cleaning their water.
