I have a plethora of asternia stars in my 220. Will harlequin shrimp eat them. If so, how long will a good population(200+++) if asternias support a pair

Maybe a few weeks, then you will be buying a chocolate chip starfish about every 2-3 weeks. I had a Harley for about 1 1/2 yrs, he cleaned the astrea starfish out of all my tanks. I bought a dozen cho chips and tried cutting one leg at a time but most did not make it, so I had to give him a whole starfish and watch the water quality closely. They are beautiful little creatures! Mine was more active at night. Hope this will help!:D

The alternative is to pass the shrimp on to another hobbyist once the Asterinas are gone...

Make sure you don't have fish or other inhabitants that make shrimp a menu item.

They're fascinating creatures. It's neat to watch one take down an Asterina!

I have member of my local forum that had this same problem and the shrimp was no help to them. at first it was working and whacked about half of them but it got to the point where there were still starfish but the shrimp just could not find them and the owner was just finding them and giving them to the shrimp in order for the shrimp to stay alive.

So what the point if your just going to find a few and then hand them over to the shrimp or just manually removing them?

I would try a wrasse sense they move much faster then a shrimp, aren't as shy as the shrimp and still can keep them once the shrimp are gone.

Or look into getting an:
arrow crab
Hawkfish
hogfish
some pufferfish (do your research first on which ones)

The stars are not a problem. Was just wondering about the awesome shrimp. I live 2 hrs away from any LFS so Chico chips is not an option

Ah okay yeah, that would be a problem for you to be constantly feeding the shrimp
