Is it legal to harvest live rock from the coast here in GA? (I know it is illegal down south in FL)

If legal, is there much out on the coast worth the trouble of getting it?

Thanks

NO! It is a federal crime and violates the Lacey Act. DO NOT DO IT!

O come on Jeremy, don't you want some poached rock? JK

It is indeed illegal. I had a conversation with the GA DNR about what is illegal and what is legal to remove from the coast and intercoastal water ways. According to them, the only thing that is acceptable to remove from its natural environment is floating debris that would obstruct boat traffic. Other than that, leave it.

So now the trick is to make some live rock float and block boat traffic. I wonder if Carrie from MythBusters would be up for the task

You would be amazed at some of the things that some people would find "floating"

Edit:

Wouldn't floating rock kinda be a problem for us?? :D

haha if we somehow roped carrie into it she could stay at my house lol and dylan its only a problem until we untie it from all that Styrofoam that was keeping it afloat lol

What if you brought Rock from Quarry and put it in a pile in shallow water. Then came back for it? I recall seeing a website where this was being done. I can't comment on all of the particulars, as I don't recall all of them. They may of had some sort of license to do so.

Not sure, but you could achieve the same results(minus the potential hitchhikers) by buyin the rock and letting the bacteria culture in a curing vat.

Agreed. I stumbled upon that site as I was searching Scuba stuff.

Curing liverock in the ocean is done, but not without considerable risk:

You must have the ocean space "leased" to do so. You cant just arbitrarily do it. Otherwise, you are removing the items illegally. The law is pretty clear on it.

Also, igneous rock CAN be used in aquariums, but it wont have nearl;y the beneficial effect on water calcium carbonate based rock.

But also minus the beneficial microorganisms (sponge, tunicates, microlife) etc.
