I am a new member to ARC but not really new to salt water aquariums although the last tank I had was about 15 years ago. Just thought that now that I am settled down and own a home (no more traveling with a professional racing team) that I would start a tank back up and wanting a place where I can learn about new things in the hobby since I have not been around it in a while. I have been browsing here and reef central and there are many different ways people due things that are new to me. I like learning about the different processes that are working and implement them into my system if I can.
I am planning to get my uncle's 180 gallon tank that I helped him start about 20 years ago. He had passed away 8 years ago and my aunt just drained water and removed fish and corals and left it as and wants it out of her house and has told me I can have it if I want. I am planning on the middle of August to make a road trip to Louisiana to pick it up. It will take me a little while to get it up and running because I will have to clean up everything from sitting for the 8 years if some items are still good, but will only find out once I get it all back here and start going through everything.
I will ask some questions from time to time just so that I don't make mistakes that others have learned from and what I can't learn from the few books I have on reef keeping.
Sorry to be so long winded but I do look forward to meeting you guys at the monthly meetings.
Eric

I also see how you guys love pics so when I make the road trip I will be sure to take a camera for photos of the move and whille add photos as I start the new build at my house.:)

Welcome welcome!

I'm a newbie to the club also, I've been stalking the posts for a couple of months and have learned so much. I'm looking forward to your pictures and reading about your process. When I did the 235 in wall build, I had planned on taking pictures and documenting the entire thing.....but totally dropped the ball!

For some additional inspiration.....check out http://www.saltwaterfish.com">www.saltwaterfish.com</a> they have a message board. There is a guy on there that did a 240g shallow in wall build, he is my HERO. Took great pics, blogged everything, tried some stuff that didn't work. He did all of the work himself. It was great to not only watch the nuts and bolts of the operation but to also see the small fish and frags go in and grow up over the course of a year. (yeah....he has been faithfully posting for more than a year now!) His system has evolved and its all been well captured.

Ok...so yeah, I'm long winded too!

Congrats on joining a great group. And, when it comes time to buying drygoods or adding to your stock list, these guys are GREAT for that also.....wonderful sponsors and members helping each other. (ok am I starting to sound like a late night info-mercial?)

Good luck to you!
Deana

Welcome

Good liuck on the move. When you need advice or help don't hesitate to ask. Normally, there are a bunch who will jump in.

Thanks Deana,
I am going to take plenty of pictures because I wish I had pics of my other tanks I had but back then there was no digital cameras and I probably do have some photos somewhere at my mothers house in the many boxes but too lazy to go through thousands of family photos. I will also check out the link on the 240 gal build sounds cool. I also have been to Creation Reef and it has been a while but Imagine Ocean was nice the last time I was in that area. I plan on checking out all stores around me I know there is one in Rockmart which is not too far as I am on the Paulding/Cobb line. I would always rather buy from locals as you also build a friendship with the people who work/own these shops and also get great advise on new products, etc.

Thanks oldschool and I am sure I will have plenty of questions. I also try to think things through and do research before I just jump in and do it because I hate having to do things twice if you know what I mean but it doesn't always work.

Welcome!! Atlanta Reef Club is a treasure chest of knowledge (about reefing) and generosity (free frags! lol).
You'll fit right in here!

Thanks guys I am planning on attending Tuesday's meeting so I can learn what I can about photographing aquariums. Although the one I am getting has been just drained of water for about 5-8 years and so I just wanted to photograph the move so that I have records of it and so I can post on here.
I am not even surewhat has been added to it since I helped my uncle set it up about 15+ years ago. I know it was a Berlin style setup I believe with a sump and protein skimmer but I am going to add a refugium.
It is going to need a good cleaning and my aunt just wants it out of her house so I am going to get it since I have plenty of room for a tank again.
Hopefully I will get to meet you all at the meeting on Tuesday if not I am going to try and make most all meetings because it looks like ARC brings in great guest speakers and I can always learn more in this hobby!
