Hi Gang!

ReefHawke here to introduce myself. I have enjoyed reef keeping before for about 6 or 7 years I guess, but been on dry land for the last 3 years. I moved a tank from Augusta to Tennessee but it is history now. Never do a 9 hour drive with live ones again! I moved back to Georgia in Martinez. About 2 minutes from Bob's Tropical Fish and 5 minutes from the awesome Star Aquatics store! They have me surrounded!

you see, I got the Fiance a 6 gal Eclipse with some freshwater guys for a spell(she missed the Reef Tank) and I simply let it go. Hard to find any excitement in FW after having a piece of the Reef to enjoy. Well she complained a little about the look of it. I figured SW what would get me into it a little more. So... Round 2 coming up and Im in training! Crusty ole salt scrubbings and some wet floors, here we come. LOL

Im pretty much the newbie all over again, making some silly mistakes. Like changing 20% water but not getting it to the same temp as the tank first. Duh! Oh well, one thing about doing reef aquaria before is that one knows things happen slowly and how cruel, not to mention costly it is to introduce things before its time. I am going according to plan of using the 6gal Nano(or should I say Micro) to make me watch things closely as they are so unforgiving and keeps you on your toes. I'll be looking forward to making some reef friends here. In Tenn I was in the boondocks and there were less than 4 other reefers in a 50 mile radious from me.

Thanks for having me.

PS:Planning on going to Star Aquatics club meeting Feb 28th. Is this meeting an extended branch of the ARC?

Humble Beginnings...

Cycling Report..
Current parameters:

Specific Gravity 1.025
Temperature 80°F
PH 8.4
Alkalinity looks like: 12- 15dKH (Poor test kit)
Ammonia 0
Nitrite 3.0
Nitrate 30 ppm

...added 1 more lb of cured LR

Thx for all the welcomes!
And like that avatar myself. Made it last night, hehe

Sand bed: I think its too deep. It will cause problems later. The reason its so deep is I plan a larger tank for one and will tranfer soon enough ...and I couldnt see throwing away 1/3 of the bag of live sand
2 inches should be about the limit right?

As the water is improving the Clown is moving about more. Alot happier now, but he is yet to figure out who really feeds him, LOL

Oh and since the T Clown has done his part in helping cycle the tank enduring the ordeal Ive named him "Tuffy"

Welcome to the ARC!

No... never heard of Star Aquatics in the years I've been here. I googled it, and the only thing that came up was a swim club .... I guess it's all water in the end... ;)

Update Feb 21:

Nitrite's .01
Diatoms doing well LOL(bottom right corner)
Added some corals and 2 Nass Snails
A second 18watt PC coming Thur
Inhabitants not fully opening due to minor nitrite I suspect or mostly because of less light than LFS had.
Comments and suggestions welcomed.

Pocillopora under 18W PC? Man I am surprised of this addition doing as well as it is. LFS had some loose frags after getting what he needed and gave me some small pieces. I glued them to one rock and they opened in 10 minutes! I do have them close to the light, about 4 inches from the 18w PC. Its been 4 or five days now and they seem to be doing fine. I have a nice light set up coming for the 24 gal but a ways off from getting the 24 ready.

Comments on this SPS situation?

Looking good. I would get that 24 setup. That pocillopora will be killer under that kind of wattage. I wouldn't doubt if it will not survive under an 18 watt PC.

Star Aquatics is owned by Jorge (he goes by George) and Angela, married couple who owned Pisces Pet Center in Jonesboro, then bought Fish Store 'n More, then sold Pisces Pet Center and Fish Store 'n More and started Aquarium Showcase in Alpharetta, then sold Aquarium Showcase to move to Jorge's home country in Central America, then moved back to the US and started Star Aquatics in Augusta maybe 3 years ago.

The above narrative covers about a 16 year period, give or take, from 1993 to present, when I first met and started doing business with them.

When they owned them, Jorge's and Angela's stores were always among the best, if not the best, in Atlanta. No doubt.

Its and awesome store and definitely worth the trip to Augusta. Meeting me is also worth the trip, so its like a two for one!!! jk. It is an amazing store though. Doesn't belong in Augusta, it should be someplace nicer. I'm not complaining though, its great to finally have a great place to buy saltwater in Augusta.
modesty will get you nowhere, go ahead and plug yourself. :)
